What is Moonstone

Moonstone is a kind of feldspar, which is the most abundant mineral group in the earth's crust. Feldspar is mainly composed of aluminosilicate and a small amount of other minerals such as sodium and calcium. When feldspar is formed with potassium and reaches a translucent pearl-like shape, it becomes a so-called moonstone. The name is given because it looks like the moon. These stones have been used as jewelry for centuries, and they are especially popular with women.

There are moonstone mines in many places, including Sri Lanka. It is classified as orthoclase, which means it is formed near volcanic rocks and hydrothermal deposits, has a translucent shape and shimmers. Moonstone is a kind of feldspar. The feldspar is abundant in the Adula mountain range in Switzerland. It crystallizes at low temperature. If it forms a milky white stone, it is classified as moonstone.
The unprocessed moonstone is not good-looking. The luminous appearance of the stone must be cut very carefully by a technician with a stone cutter. They are usually cut into cabochons, showing round and polished surfaces. The cabochon can have various shapes, but mainly teardrop and ellipse. When properly cut, the stone will shine, which is the halo of feldspar.

All moonstones have a blue to white tone, but the base color of the stone is transparent, white, yellow, orange or gray. They must be handled carefully because moonstones are soft and fragile. In the case of improper handling, they are easily scratched or broken. Although small scratches can be repaired, they will reduce the overall size of the stone. Most moonstone jewellery is designed to protect the stones while showing the light blue color, and the wearer should ensure that they are secured in the accessory.

Although it is also suitable for men's jewelry, moonstones are most often designed for women. Large cabochons can be used for necklaces and bracelets, and smaller stones can be used for earrings and rings. The moonstone can be wiped lightly with a soft cloth, and it can be oiled when it loses its luster. However, the wearer should avoid exposing it to excessive light and irritating chemicals, and it is best to remove it when exposed to water.
